You have a skateboard, what is it?
K-I just bought a new deck, Karl Watson Organika model, I will probably
have it for a year like
my last one. Free Autobahn wheels which I won in a contest, Royal Trucks,
Kayo Grip, Ninja Bearings and Monkey Mounting Hardware.
You’re a veteran Kevin, what changes have
you seen in skateboarding in the years you have been skating?
K-It seems a little more accepted by everyone and there are many different
types of people skateboarding. The skating community is not as closely
knit as it once was. Tricks have become more technical, tricks that
were being done on curbs years ago are now being done on handrails.
Favorite local skate-spots?
K-I really like the Oshkosh skate park, the Green Bay outdoor park and
any good flat ground or manual pads. Tennis courts are a fave because
they are nice and smooth.
Most historic street skate-spot in Oshkosh?
K-For me it would be the park. I remember being dropped off there before
I could drive.
Who have been influential people in your life? what about influential
skateboarders?
K-My parents and best friends Joe, John and Mike. Recently, my good
friend Jody.
Skaters would have to be Rodney Mullen my all time favorite. Ocean Howell,
Jason
Rothmeyer, Jason Munn, Ray Barbee and Brian Lotti. (and the other Brian
Lahti).
What are the positives and negatives of skating
in 2005?
K-The positives would have to be the skate parks going up everywhere
and more people seem to be skating. The negatives: People not being
as dedicated. It is not as personal as it once was. Everywhere you turn
you see skateboarding in magazines, movies, milk advertisements. It
seems as though it is almost a gimmick for some people.
You have been skateboarding for a long time,
exactly how long?
K-From the time I knee boarded down the driveway until now it has been
nineteen years.
What has kept you going? What makes you tick as
a skater?
K-The simple fact that you can do it by yourself. Of course, it is simply
fun! Still learning new tricks after all of these years and seeing all
of the new kids enjoying it.
You filmed a ton for the new SOF shop video.
More than a lot of the team members. How did you pull that off?
K-It has always been a dream of mine since I was a teenager to have
my own part in a video so it is very flattering to be a part of the
new one. Especially, with all the amazing skaters on the team.
Malteds or Milkshakes?
K-Malteds.
YES!
K-More flavor baby!
What flavor is your flavorite?
K-White like me. Sorry boring white.
You mean vanilla?
Yeah.
Besides skateboarding, an interest and love of
yours is music right?
K-Yep, definitely.
Tell us about your interest in music and how it
plays a part in your life.
K-I love music, it can totally alter your mood for the day. A world
without music would be extremely dull, I just couldn't picture it. I
have been listening to music for as long as I have been skateboarding.
Both have been very fascinating because you can personalize them.
What types of music do you listen to? Which bands?
K-I basically will listen to everything except rap, country and opera.
Some of my favorites are Align, Hot Water Music, Modest Mouse, Smashing
Pumpkins, Radiohead and The Fire Theft.
(Lahti just sneezed and Kevin "Blessed"
him.)
You play an instrument and have played in bands...briefly
tell us about that stuff.
K-I started out in a band called Semi-Circle (terrible name, I know)
which lasted a year.
Then we got a new singer and got all new songs and re-named the band
SUNDAY FLOOD.
I played drums in this band for eight years. I hate to use the word
but we typically got labeled an emo band. I guess you can tell by the
name huh?
Yeah but at least you didn't have the name Two
Weeks from Sundays Flood.
K-Yeah basically anything with a day of week, a name of a month or a
number is a clue to it being an
emo band.
What is your favorite skateboard band of all
time?
K-You mean like JFA and all those bands?
Yeah, there used to be a whole sub genre of punk
rock bands that were labeled and labeled themselves "skaterock".
K-Ok, I would have to go with "Handy w/ Shovels". They were
in a Planet Earth video.
Any tattoos?
K-No I dislike tattoos.
Would you date a girl with a tattoo?
K-Yes, unless it was on their lower back, generic. Then they might be
disqualified.
When you think of a great skateboard film that
inspires you, which one is it?
K-There are two. H-Street "Hokus Pokus".
Lahti-Just came out on DVD.
K-I will have to get it.
K-The other one is Plan B "Questionable".
Do you have any advice, comments or other closing
commentary?
K-Whatever you do in life, whether it is skateboarding, sailing or wall
climbing,
don't worry about anybody else and concentrate on yourself. Don't ever
go looking for an
audience, let the audience come to you.
